Fifteen years ago Ryan Sullivan met the new girl in high school who would become his best friend, Victoria “Vicki” Sullivan. Together they could relax and be themselves with one another without pretensions or expectations. Vicki loved the camaraderie of being around the Sullivan family and Ryan loved that around Vicki he could relax and shake off his so-called “perfections.” But when Vickie’s military family is once again shipped out on new orders she has to pull up roots and start someplace else all over again. However, she left something very important behind…her heart.

Fifteen years later Ryan and Vicki have kept in contact via emails and telephone. His busy life as a professional baseball player and her marriage to a prominent artist has kept them physically separated. But her recent divorce and frustrated efforts at building her sculpting career has removed her from the throes of her possessive husband’s reach in Italy and landed her back in San Francisco and ironically into the arms of her old friend Ryan. He speeds in when a powerful art curator attempts to mold and shape her future into something evil and disturbed.

Ryan only thought he was playing in the major leagues as the star pitcher for the Hawks. But his easygoing manner, reputation as a ladies’ man, and the fastballs he’s known for has not prepared him for the number of innings he must play or switching positions as the batter up when he decides to hit a homer for Vicki’s heart. When Ryan steps up to the plate to profess his love for Vicki, he won’t make it to third base with the shutouts that she’s delivering. In an effort to protect their friendship and her heart from possible rejection she continues to make light of Ryan’s advances and he must decide if he will take a walk or be the Ace that he is and pitch a strike at her heart. While Vicki balances the fine line of her love for Ryan and protecting their friendship, she must also fight for her career while attempting to create the best masterpiece of her life.

When friendship, their careers, and the game of love is on the line they must decide if they will continue to play hardball with the enemies and their hearts or if they will win the playoffs to head for the championships.
“Let Me Be The One” is my favorite story in the Sullivan series thus far. While I enjoyed all of the books in this series, this one shares a beautiful friendship developed from two people who were real with one another. It showed the challenges that people go through in real life and how sometimes they miss out on their destiny. But what I loved most was no matter how much money and influence he had, Ryan stepped back and allowed his best friend to make her own decisions and gain her own sense of strength by just supporting her. Their relationship was able to blossom into something beyond the physical because they had known one another for so long and had developed a genuine friendship through the years, which time had distance has nurtured. While this was a page turner for me, it was also a great emotional read as you got to know the characters from being teenagers through adulthood and relating to their choices was easy.
